Lyon County was originally organized as Breckenridge County in 1855. Even after its organization, the new county was attached to Madison County for “Civil/Criminal and Military Purposes”. At this time, Columbia was designated as the county seat. In February of 1857, Breckenridge County broke free from Madison County and by 1858, Americus was voted to become the new county seat. Soon, the town of Emporia secured the southern county line three miles north of the town of Madison and became nearer to the geographical center of the county. In 1860, Emporia was voted the new county seat of Breckenridge County, beating Americus by 155 votes. With the secession of the South, residents of Breckenridge County renamed their county Lyon County after Nathaniel Lyon. Nathaniel Lyon was the first Union General killed in the War Between the States. In 1866, the stone courthouse was built on the northwest corner of Third Avenue and Commercial Street. The plans for the courthouse were furnished by John Hammond and the contract for the building went to Dr. Thomas Armor and Perry B. Mazson. The stone courthouse was used until 1902 when a new courthouse was erected on the northeast corner of Fourth Avenue and Commercial Street.
