History

In 1856, the Burlington Town Company was organized in the fall of 1856 to create the future town of Burlington.  The Burlington Town Company was organized by C. W. Babcock and B.W. Woodward and was named in honor of the City of Burlington, Vermont.  By 1857, the site of the future town of Burlington was selected and people were designated to occupy and hold the space.  By 1859, Burlington had organized as a village and had blossomed into a third class city by 1870.  After a long debate, Burlington was officially named county seat in 1865.

Burlington is proud of its many first experiences.  Burlington is the site of the county’s first steam sawmill in 1857.  The first child born in Burlington was born in May of 1858.  Burlington’s first agricultural fair was held in 1860.  Burlington also issued the first ordinance in the United States to ban smoking of cigarettes, but not cigars.  Burlington was home to three cigar factories at the time.  The Burlington Volunteer Militia formed in 1863 and the Burlington's Company C, 137 Infantry, 35th Division mobilized August 5, 1917.

The city grew due to its prime location along a branch of the Sante Fe and the Katy Railroad and the Neosho River.  The Neosho River allowed for trading, flour milling, farming, generating electric power, and even served as a city water source.  Burlington gained its nickname “Catfish Capitol of the World” because of the large size and number of catfish caught in the Neosho River near the city.

In 1960, construction began on the John Redmond Reservoir northwest of Burlington.  This development changed Burlington from a solely agricultural community to a city looking for industrial development.  In the late 1970s, construction began on the Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station, which had a tremendous economic impact on the city and the county.  To learn more about Burlington’s rich history, please visit: http://www.skyways.org/towns/Burlington/guide.html
